Dasypus novemcinctus

The armadillo is know in this range from Val Verde and Terrell counties. It is not known from the western Trans-Pecos. They are not uncommon in eastern Val Verde county, but become less common as the range heads westward. This is most likely because they are a burrowing animal, and much of the Trans-Pecos ground is too hard for it to burrow in.
This armadillo was photographed at night near Loma Alta, Val Verde county as it crossed highway 277.
